United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship.  In the three months the application was open in 2019, over 7,000 young leaders applied to join the Class of 2019 on 1,209 campuses across 135 nations.  69 campuses worldwide (just 6%) were selected to host the 1,092 Millennium Fellows.  The Class of 2019 is bold, innovative, and inclusive. Millennium Fellows' Projects are projected to positively impact the lives of over 978,400 people worldwide this year.

Millennium Fellowship Project: Born Different Advocate Alliance

The Born Different Advocate Alliance (BDAA) is a student-run organization at Florida International University (FIU), pending 501(c)(3) verification. The BDAA's mission statement is to ensure all students with disabilities have access to quality education and equal opportunities by providing peer tutoring services at high schools and career-related workshops at colleges across the United States.

Measurable Goals:

  • Hold at least four on-campus events with two of them in collaboration with potential nonprofit sponsors.

  • Bridge the gap between abled and disabled students by encouraging participation in volunteer opportunities and hosting an event for the community to attend.

  • Support FIU in its efforts to become a more inclusive and accessible environment for all students by listening to the needs of those with disabilities.

  • Expand the impact of the BDAA by opening its first high school chapter

  • Become verified as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit within the state of Florida

About the Millennium Fellow

Afsaana Kiara Mohammed is an undergraduate student double majoring in International Relations and Political Science at Florida International University in Miami, Florida USA. She is pursuing a certificate in Peace Corps Prep and Middle Eastern Studies. Upon graduation, Kiara plans to earn a Master's degree in International Relations.

She is passionate about empowering young girls, protecting the environment and equal opportunities for all persons. Her main goal is to become a role model for the youth in her community as a young individual using her platform to speak out on some of the issues that affect them.
