" As a Hispanic first-generation college student, I have reflected upon how my identity has been shaped by power, privilege, and oppression. I believe education is a basic human right that should be guaranteed for all children and adolescents. All students should have competent and caring teachers, stimulating and participatory learning, a relevant and meaningful curriculum, support from within the school, as well as social inclusion and gender equality. With that being said, I'm motivated to create a mindfulness project that is important, relevant, and helpful to the community that I will be serving. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Be In The Present Moment

The project aims is to introduce and practice mindfulness with 20 pre-kindergarten children and 20 first graders per class. Jazlynn want to ensure that students understand the importance of mindfulness and continue to use at least one mindfulness activity after she leaves their class. Depending on what school is interested in working with me:

1. (Winter Park Day Nursery) I will invite WPDN teachers and parents to watch the film ‘May I Be Happy'. This film brings awareness to the benefits of mindfulness as a way out of violence and suffering, and as an attainable solution for younger generations. I will then create a new mindfulness class for each day of the week for the 5-year olds.
A sample activity: Are You Present?
Notice..
5 Things You See
4 Things You Feel
3 Things You Hear
2 Things You Smell
1 Thing You Taste

The children will draw these things and present.
2. (Killarney Elementary School) I will invite 1st grade teachers and parents to watch the film ‘May I Be Happy'. I will then practice the Are You Present activity with every 1st grade class.
3. (Colonial High School) I will invite teachers, students, and parents to watch the film ‘May I Be Happy'. I will then create a book club for any interested seniors. We would read at least 2 mindfulness books. I will give everyone the opportunity to voice their opinion and lead each session with the Are You Present activity.
