UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT FRIDA ALOO, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2020.

University of Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania, United States | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 2

" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it provides a great platform for me to engage my passion for the well-being of African students on my college campus and allows me to have a great impact. I love that I will be able to work with other like-minded and passionate students from whom I can learn and who I can share my ideas with. This is an incredible opportunity for me to grow, to learn and to build my ideas on making the world a more equitable and accessible place for all people. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Penn AfroWellness Initiative

Penn AfroWellness Initiative is a wellness and empowerment project aimed at promoting mental health and wellness among African international students at the University of Pennsylvania. Many African international students like myself struggle with mental health and especially exacerbated by the complexities of adjusting to life in a new country and a new system of education so far away from home. My goals include: encouraging and normalizing conversations about mental health and destigmatizing seeking of mental health care. I also hope to provide a safe space for students to realize that their struggles, although different, are normal and addressable. I will organize monthly meetings and events aimed at encouraging these conversations as well as provide students with tips that they can leverage to take care of themselves and seek mental health care early so that they can receive help early. My long term goal is to address suicides and other harmful behaviors associated with mental health illnesses.
