Millennium Fellowship Project: IforCDL
As a group, we have a dual sensitivity towards both vulnerable communities and climate change. We firmly believe that these two issues are tightly linked, and that vulnerable communities are at the forefront of climate change and the most impacted. However, we also understand that in order to achieve a truly sustainable world, we need everyone's input and for everyone to be included.
To address these issues, we propose a project that combines a set of initiatives revolving around 1) community outreach to disabled people, and 2) raising awareness around climate change. Our aim is to connect local initiatives at the community/university/ city levels with global climate advocacy, in arenas like the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties:
1)
The focus of our project is to provide a platform for disabled people to voice their concerns and to actively participate in climate action. Disabled people are often overlooked in discussions around climate change, despite being one of the most vulnerable groups.
To achieve this, we propose a series of initiatives that will help us to reach out to disabled people and raise awareness around climate change: we will organize events that focus on disability and climate change, organize volunteering with disability organizations, and lastly, help provide them with information and resources on climate change action at their scale.
Next, we also aim to connect with local schools and universities to educate young people about the link between disability, climate change, and sustainability. We strongly think that by involving young people in our project, we can inspire the next generation of climate activists and encourage them to become the next change-makers!
2)
Lastly, we plan to connect these actions with international climate advocacy in the UNFCCC COP28 to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on disabled people and to advocate for policies that are inclusive and equitable.
