Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Hekaya

y project focuses on preserving the knowledge and meaning-making of indigenous communities within the North African region, focusing specifically on women and low-income communities, as they are the most impacted by the hierarchy of languages prevalent within the region. Language as it relates to power and social status is prevalent, and due to the lack of educational opportunities for many of these individuals, working on unpacking the stigma surrounding the indigenous languages of North Africa by giving these languages space through translation and documentation of stories. By ensuring accurate translation, this project has allowed me to create a space where these languages— and the histories they carry are passed down are passed to future generations. It is through documenting stories and experiences we can understand the groups and histories that are often overlooked, and use these translations to further uplift and inspire equitable policy and change moving forward.
