" I am excited to be in a Millennium Fellow because it is something new and different for me, and I honestly see it as an honor to serve in my community. This opportunity will allow me to contribute toward the health and well-being of others, which is the main thing of why I do the work I do. Through this fellowship, I hope to expand my impact, grow as a leader, and collaborate with others who share the same passion for building healthier and stronger communities. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Milk Matters

My Millennium Fellowship project, “Milk Matters: What’s in Your Carton?”, focuses on how milk packaging, especially plastic, can expose people to chemicals like phthalates. In the lab, I collected different types of milk sold in plastic containers and used a methanol-based extraction method followed by HPLC to screen for possible plastic-related contaminants. At the same time, I created educational flyers and tabled in the University Center, using real milk containers (plastic jug, carton, and glass bottle) to talk with students and faculty about safer packaging choices. The project is aligned with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which calls for more sustainable and informed consumer behaviors. Overall, my goal is to combine scientific data and campus outreach to help the Lynn community make healthier, more sustainable decisions about the milk they buy and drink.
