" I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow because this would me my first time doing formally recognised fieldwork and being a changemaker. Being from a developing country, I have witnessed problems-micro and macro that have developed and impetus within me to bring about real change. As a social sciences student, i feel it's my responsibility to be an active participant and citizen for my society. And this fellowship is exactly what provides me with the platform I need. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Change Begins With You

The project aims to provide education to migrant slum dweller children in Bengaluru, India. It serves children up to the age of 14 by providing school supplies and guiding them, with my team, through admissions into government schools.

During the Millennium Fellowship, the project focused on foundational academic support, confidence-building, and value-based learning for children living in nearby urban slum communities. I conducted regular weekly learning sessions in basic literacy, numeracy, and English, with a focus on reading comprehension, basic arithmetic, and spoken English. By the end of the Fellowship period, most children showed measurable improvement in reading fluency, vocabulary recall, and basic math accuracy. While some students attended sessions regularly, others had irregular attendance due to household responsibilities or family mobility. I was able to provide notebooks, worksheets, and basic learning materials, though sustaining a long-term routine will require continued community involvement.

About the Millennium Fellow

Irtiqa Wani, is an aspiring student, with dreams that some might consider over-ambitious. She sees herself as a diplomat, social worker, policy maker and someone who would actually bring change to the underserved portions of the society. She is still an amateur, a college student learning the complex dynamics of society and how policies are made to solve societal problems.
