" “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” By being a part of the Millennium Fellowship, I will be able to work towards issues I have always been passionate about. I cannot expect change as long as I don't contribute my labour towards bringing the change. The Millennium Fellowship is the opportunity I took to further enhance my advocacy, and I believe this opportunity will refine me as a person and will align my advocacy with UNAI principles and SDGs. I look forward to learn and including my learnings in my advocacy in the future. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Namma Clean Zone

The college I study in is situated in one of the most crowded and commercial parts of the city, where there are numerous schools and colleges. Other than that, we have one of the major shopping and youth attractions situated there. One thing that is often witnessed in the area is how the garbage in those areas is mostly found on the roads and footpaths, which are the daily route of pedestrians. This has led to foul smell lingering throughout the area, and also, to make it worse, rats are found all around for the same reason. There is also a poorly maintained public toilet, which makes it hard to pass that road. These areas are unhygienic, creating a bad atmosphere for the students and others who walk past them daily. So, I, along with one of the Fellows, have decided to come together in raising awareness regarding this issue and gather support as we move along. Under our project, we will be lodging a formal complaint to the BBMP, the municipal authority responsible for keeping the city clean, requesting that they take immediate action to clean up the area. We are also ready to raise funds and, through that fund, provide cleaning supplies to support the clean-up drive. Our aim is to ensure long-term maintenance and not just a short-term fix. One of the other concerns is public urination, which we will look forward to tackling by requesting the authorities to install CCTV cameras and monitor and discourage this behaviour.
