" Empathy and advocacy, grounded in my commitment to social justice and preventative medicine, guide my purpose. The Millennium Fellowship will help me strengthen these values through collaboration with diverse peers and hands-on learning. The skills I acquire will enable me to make a stronger impact in raising awareness of global health issues and align my efforts with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. I'm eager to grow as a leader and help shape practical, creative solutions to address health inequities worldwide. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Resilience against Resistance
My project aims to raise awareness about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Nairobi and beyond. AMR is a silent global health burden that causes millions of death worldwide.1 in 5 of those death occurs among children under 5 years old. Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganism (bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites) no longer respond to antimicrobial medications. This can be due to various reasons such as misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, widespread antibiotic use in livestock and aquaculture, poor sanitation and hygiene, and environmental factors like climate change. I plan to educate local communities about the dangers of AMR and how to exercise prevention and control. An online platform will be set where I will be sharing videos and photos about AMR. Different languages will be used in the videos to reach a wider audience. On our social media platform, we will be hosting a variety of fun activities that will be designed to captivate the youth, e.g arts and memes competitions and lighthearted quizzes concerning AMR. A series of webinars and events will be conducted which will be targeting university students. These webinars will be teaching the youth about AMR and how they can contribute to the fight against AMR.
