" “The SDGs to me are a model of development that we must maintain and support, it is indeed the movement that can cause a revolution change in our world. I see Microbiology as a pivotal tool in the achievement of the sustainable development goals as the ubiquitous nature of microbes and their multivariate potentials can be most harnessed in different aspects of the SDGs framework. I am super excited "– Kehinde Adebiyi "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Sustainable Development Goals Awareness Campaign Tour, Lagos State University (SDGsACT LASU)

Kehinde Adebiyi founded the Sustainable Development Goals Awareness Campaign Tour, wherein he leads different professionals and undergraduates to affiliate their majors to the SDGs framework.
Through SDGsACT, Kehinde led numerous projects including Microbes for SDGs, Medical Outreaches, Environmental Sustainability campaign amongst many others. He contributed new efforts to the global goals through environmental and medical microbiology research. Below are the project details implemented by the Millennium Fellow.
1. Microbes for SDGs: Through this initiative, Kehinde led the efforts to tackle environmental pollution using microorganisms. He isolated bacteria species from oil-polluted environments and tested their abilities to help remove harmful metals from the environment. Three of the isolated bacteria demonstrated promising water treatment capabilities, leading to advanced research at the Department of Microbiology at Lagos State University. Additionally, Kehinde developed a comprehensive catalog documenting antimicrobial resistance patterns for the microorganisms he isolated, providing highly needed data for understanding antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and informing effective treatment strategies. Through this project, Kehinde showcased the numerous potentials on how microorganisms can help advance the SDG goals 3 and 6.
2. Infectious Diseases Screening Day: As part of his Millennium Fellowship project, Kehinde partnered with doctors and medical students at the Lagos State University College of Medicine to organize a free infectious diseases screening day, at the suburb of the LASU Okoko area on 20th October 2018. Different rapid diagnostics tests for STIs were done, with free distribution of basic sexual protection materials. Over 500 people attended the screening.
3. Environmental conference: SDGsACT organized an Environmental conference which was held on the 3rd of October 2018 with the theme: Environmental Management and Advocacy: A Tool To Sustainable Development. This program was aimed at promoting a sustainable environment by enlightening students on proper sanitation and promoting waste disposal through recycling. Kehinde was part of the speaker and spoke on the subtheme on ‘The science of waste recycling’. The program has over 400 students in attendance.
4. SDGs Interim Class and Investiture Ceremonies: As founder for the SDGsACT movement at LASU and Campus Director for the Millennium Fellowship, Kehinde has successfully led the SDGs class tagged interim class, which is aimed at equipping students with the knowledge of global goals and how their majors and professional interests can be tied to any of the goal(s) frameworks. Two sets of students have successfully graduated, with the third set to be graduated on the 3rd of December 2018.
