" Being a part of this fellowship would be an opportunity for me to measure my capabilities and develop myself as an skilled individual. Though I firmly believe in my dream to successfully make a positive change for the society but I believe I have yet much to learn in order to turn this dream into a reality. Working with more like-minded people within the fellowship I hope to gain more insights regarding my field of interest that would help me with a head start in my journey. I believe the Millennium Fellowship experience would help me develop myself as an individual efficient and competent enough to make desired changes. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Shuchona

Shuchona is a Bengali word that means "The Beginning," It is an initiative that works with the sole purpose of mitigating the stigma of sex education persistent in our society. Considering current circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that the general people, particularly young people, are unfamiliar with fundamental sex education at some point, which leads to an unfavorable course of events. Furthermore, adolescents going through puberty have a difficult time coping with their growth since they lack sufficient education and guidance. Project Shuchona aims to educate the youth as well as the general population with basic knowledge of sex education, personal hygiene, menstruation, healthy physical relationships as well the concept of consent and emotional connection amongst partners. This project-based on SDG 4: Quality Education followed by SDG 3- Good health and well-being, SDG 5- Gender Equality, and SDG 8- Decent Work and Economic Growth. And UNAI: Human Rights For All. Depending on the state of the Corona pandemic, we may be active on both virtual and physical platforms. This project would be conducted into workshops, followed by a QnA session with one of the field's experts. The workshops would follow our Sex-Ed module, well-being, and good health, focusing on basic concepts like reproductive health, personal and menstrual hygiene, emotional connection between partners, healthy physical relationships, etc. In addition to our regular seminars, we will offer one-on-one consultations and logistical help for basic hygiene as needed. We believe that this sector requires immediate attention, and working bit by bit would result in a massive change. We think our project Shuchona would be the beginning of one of the most positive changes in our social and cultural paradigms. With our constant efforts, we hope to spread the initiative nationwide within 24-36 months.

About the Millennium Fellow

Coming from a conservative background, Zaima Tanzim is an enthusiastic and motivated individual. She is currently pursuing her bachelors in Economics and Development Studies. From her early school days, she has been associated with several youth organizations which primarily worked to mitigate education problems and other challenges faced by the underprivileged children. Working at the most initial grounds she had the opportunity observe their lives from a very close distance. At a certain point she realized that these children grew up in such conditions where basic education was a dire need and sex education was a luxury. Her insight and dedication with this field grew along with time, it became pretty evident that this lack of sex education does not only affect the under privileges rather the development of the society as a whole. It has been since then that she has been actively working to make changes in this sector of development. She dreams to have a change making initiative of her own someday that would work dedicatedly to create a better future.
