" I have always perceived law, not as a delineated field of study, but as an inherently inter-disciplinary field of profession. Due to its sheer enabling ability, legal awareness and legal aid can drive structural changes in society. Having understood this, and especially as a law student, I find the Milenium Fellowship as a whole, and particularly as it applies to law students, as capable of initiating discussions on empathy and social leadership, and how these values are inherently a part of perceiving and implementing the law. This is a conception of law that construed the core of Indian polymath Dr B R Ambedkar's constitutional and political philosophy, and it is a philosophy that fundamentally drives my interest in law and any social impact project that I engage with. The fellowship, therefore, is a unique opportunity in itself to do meaningful work that amalgamates elements of law, justice, philosophy and humanness. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Sex Education for All (SEFA)

Sex Education For All (SEFA): which focuses on UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education in close alignment with the United Nations Academic Impact: Principle 6 furthering a commitment to encouraging global citizenship through education. We have reached out to adolescents from 9-12th standard in High Schools across India, equipping them with sex education and legal requisites that a child their age should be aware of. From understanding consent, to having the tools to deal with cyber harassment, or making benefits of the mental health act, SEFA aspires to inspire as many students as possible. With as many as 30 people from NUJS on board, Tushmi Udyalak as the Founder, Sushovan Patnaik as the co-founder are also heading the cohort as campus ambassadors of NUJS. We aim to equip the young adults at NUJS with social impact leadership training and skills as provided by UN MCN and UNAI. Social media harassment (IT Act and other related statutes), grooming (minors + consent), IPC Provisions (Outrage of Modesty, Voyeurism, etc.), POCSO and Sex Education topics like STI, pregnancy test, birth control etc have been covered via a Primer by us law-students in this project.

About the Millennium Fellow

Sushovan Patnaik is a deeply passionate law student and journalism enthusiast currently studying at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, India. His fundamental interest in law, in strange ways, emerged from his childhood obsession with literature. He has been keenly interested in learning about compassionate storytelling for the best part of his formative years and his pursuit of narrative journalism opportunities as well as learning about civil rights lawyering flows out of this interest. He believes his fate is serendipitously and perpetually stuck in a triple junction of law, literature and journalism.
