" "In a world that has become so interconnected and whose functionality is inter-national in almost every aspect, the lack of sustainable and longstanding solutions for global issues such as the immigration crisis around the world demonstrates the necessity to look within problems such as this and recognize the underlying factors which tied together have produced mass migrations across the globe. It is only when an issue is dissected and the key influencers are targeted and dealt with in an effective and sustainable manner that true solutions are produced and whose implementation can create less harsh and unjust systems of governments, allowing individuals to live in peace, security and with the ability to seek the happiness every person in this world is entitled to. My goal is to work towards reducing injustices and inequalities which impact the most vulnurable individuals, such as migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, to be treated with respect, dignity and be given the rights they are entitled to by the UN Charter states across the globe signed to uphold and protect. It is for them that I work towards a more sustainable and secure future. " "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Caught in the Middle: Analyzing the Impact of Migration Policy at the San Diego-Tijuana Border

The project is a hands-on, cross-border research project that concretely advances the UN goal of reducing inequality within and between countries. More specifically, this collective research focuses on development and analysis of migration policy in the immediate wake of the anticipated SCOTUS ruling, (June 2022) on the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" policy. The research will consist of two sections:surveys and elite interviews with Customs and Border Patrol officers , non-governmental organizations, Depratment of Homeland Security officials, as well as asylum seekers and residents of Tijuana, and a campus education component in which campus-wide forums and educational endevours will be conducted to not only educate the campus at PLNU and raise awareness, but attempt to initiate the involvement and movement to recognize the impacts of this policy and seek to reduce the inequalities and human rights violations occurring under the "Remain in Mexico" policy.

About the Millennium Fellow

Ana Paula Cuen is a dedicated, passionate and committed young woman studying to receive her bachelor's degree in International Studies with a concentration in Peace Studies at Point Loma Nazarene University in the city of San Diego, California. She was born and raised in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and having grown up experiencing the culture of a border city as well as crossing the border all her life has allowed her to gain first hand experience and insight on the inequalities produced by stringent policies and unsustainable inter-state agreements. She has been invovled in campus wide efforts to promote diversity, inclusion and community within her university in leadership positions as well as seek to advance her career goals by working with NGOs and human rights groups within the U.S., Mexico and Latin America. She hopes to continue her work within immigration and human rights issues and become an agent for a more just and sustainable future for coming generations.
