Millennium Fellowship Project: SHIKSHANAM

"Knowledge is one that liberates." - Shri VishnuPurana (1.19.41)

With this thought and a wish to transform the world into a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable place, the Millennium fellows of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University started the project “Shikshanam” based on SDG 4- Quality Education, aimed to work on the education of impoverished children and to support them in their higher education.
Through this project, the fellows aim to work on the literacy of impoverished children and to support some of them in their higher education. The project involves rigorous field visits where our fellows have been going to teach underprivileged children.
A devised curriculum suiting their needs is being taught to these children. Our team focuses on ensuring clarity of concepts which is reinforced by way of activities and hands-on learning.
We are currently educating 35-40 children under our cohort’s ambit. We are trying to identify a few of these lots that have the potential, and caliber and appear promising. We are working tirelessly to secure admission for these students in a private school in their locality instead of a government school so that they have access to better facilities. To cover the monetary aspect of their private school education, we would contact the District Inspector of Schools under the Right to Education Act. We are conducting pressing meetings with government school principals and teachers to ensure that the remaining who are not able to qualify for admission to a private school, are provided remedial classes in government schools. Remedial classes are for those students who aren’t as equipped as they should be according to the Grade that they are in; special focus would be given to ensure that they are able to cope with their counterparts.
The cohort went a step ahead and conducted lessons on basic Legal Rights and Financial literacy for the parents of these children. They were also explained provisions related to free Legal Aid and were also invited to the University’s annual Legal Aid Camp.

About the Millennium Fellow

As a girl that too coming from a comparatively less developed area, Astha have gone through a few experiences that showed me the real consequences that one has to go through for being a girl, sad but true. My journey, as a girl, started as soon as she went out of my hometown for quality education. The decision and the location decided for me was the reflection of the fact that she was a girl, keeping all that aside, she still is grateful to her parents for at least making efforts for my intellectual growth. Then and now, a long journey has been traveled by this girl. Sometimes, this girl has to say no to an opportunity because of X, Y, Z reasons that are important only in our case. And sometimes, this girl had to pay the price for saying these opportunities yes. She does not
want to cite a sad story to become a Millennium Fellow; She want to be a Fellow so that she can work for creating a much more inclusive and safe environment
for all genders. Though it seems impossible, she does want to see a world where a girl has to say no to any opportunity that is knocking on her door because of her gender and also a world where a girl has to pay the pricee for saying yes to these opportunities.
