Millennium Fellowship Project: Increasing Literacy in our Communities
Attempting to increase literacy by pairing together with local libraries or spaces and creating events where people can come to read. Literacy and reading are such important tools, especially for those wanting to go into higher education and those who form part of minority communities.
About the Millennium Fellow
Ninive Lizbeth Garcia is a second-year International Relations student at the University of California, Davis. Her hometown of Sacramento allowed her the opportunity to take a closer glance at politics & government and helped her to develop an interest in serving the community. In high school, she was able to take on several leadership experiences such as being a part of the coordinating and planning committee for one of the clubs she volunteered at. Outside of school, Ninive often volunteered at her elementary school, most notably at its afterschool reading program. Reading from a young age allowed her not only to explore other worlds but gave her the skills needed to succeed as she progressed in her education. In addition to this, Ninive connected to her culture through her involvement in Mexican folk dancing, something that allowed her to proudly share her heritage with others. This tradition is something that she has continued in university as a part of UC Davis' Danzantes Del Alma.
