Millennium Fellowship Project: Stop Stubble Burning

Every year, From October to December in Delhi, the air quality remains at its worst,
and the primary reason for this problem is Stubble (parali) burning in Punjab and
Haryana. Our project- "Let Us Stop Stubble Burning" aims at improving the air quality of Delhi by providing innovative and effective solutions for the problem of Stubble burning. This project, if gets successful will surely impact thousands of lives that suffer every year due to this problem. Stubble burning has many ill effects on the environment as well as on humans. In India, over 32 million stubble is generated on an annual basis. The main reason why this stubble burning is still practiced in India is that the farmers are so used to this practice and the lack of knowing what else they can do with this stubble also, to increase their incomes they keep on switching between rice and wheat crops. Our projects aim at providing an alternative solution to stubble burning some of them are: First, Bio-Enzyme- PUSA is a radical solution devised by Indian Agriculture Research Institute, when it is sprayed over stubble crops it can decompose within 20-25 days and turns it into manure which can be further used by the farmer, it also increases soil's nutrient content when used over some time. Second, In-situ treatment of stubble crops, certain equipment and techniques should be provided to the farmer so that he can mix the stubble back into the soil. Third, in Exsitu treatment, certain industries, and private companies requires stubble as their raw materials, and farmers should be connected with them so that both parties can be benefitted. Forth, stubble can be used in different ways like cattle fodder, fuel, & biochar production. Fifth, changing the crop pattern to low residue crops that are not water intensive. In all these alternatives mentioned above we will be requiring the support of the government as if there is some strict rule or policy implemented on this issue, it would be beneficial for our project.
