Millennium Fellowship Project: WAW project (We Are Women)
WAW, a subproject of We are Girls, aims to empower women by helping them navigate their potentials and unleash their influencing power. In our society today, many women are breaking boundaries and exploring diverse career paths. To facilitate this growth during the project, we established a reading club as one of our strategies. Our belief is that for change to take place, our mindset must be reset.
Sadly, societal norms have conditioned many girls and women to believe in gender inequality and limit their capabilities as a result. As such, we shared books written by authors who challenged these beliefs with daily insights at the reading club meetings. To promote accountability among participants while adhering to the Law of Ubuntu - which states "I am because you are"- each participant was assigned a reading companion.
Many girls and women were raised with the belief that their capabilities were limited due to gender inequality. Books written by authors who have challenged this notion were shared, along with daily insights. To adhere to the Law of Ubuntu, which states "I am because you are,"each attendee was assigned a reading companion for accountability purposes.
During the reading club meetings, each participants was assigned to host the Friday insight day where they share all they've learnt from the book. In October, We engaged in a reading challenge and every Friday was meant for sharing what was learnt and how to apply it to our lives.
The primary objective of the project was to empower 20 women by transforming their mindsets and nurturing them as change agents. The reason we opted for 20 women it is because we want our goal to be achievable and measurable.
Currently, we have a cohort of 12 active women who are actively pursuing personal growth and development. The project is ongoing with plans to expand its reach to secondary school girls. In partnership with the Millennium Campus Network, a career exploration and skill acquisition event will be hosted in Ososa community situated in Ogun State during the upcoming year.
