Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Garima

In a nutshell, my project focuses on the prevention of witchcraft killings in the tribal state of Jharkhand where I belong. Having grown up in a remote town in this Indian state, tales of women being discriminated against, ostracized, pelted, and in worst-case scenarios, lynched to death were common. My project focuses on two questions related to this. First, why does this happen in Jharkhand? Second, why do women fall victim to this? Firstly, Jharkhand remains a state still untouched by modern amenities of civilization in several areas. It is a cripplingly poor state with villages and outskirts lacking basic facilities like access to education, electricity, clean drinking water, etc. Such prevailing conditions foster unawareness and thus the prevalence of social taboos such as the concept of witchcraft. Secondly and more concerningly, my project focuses on witchcraft killings because of its inherent element of gender discrimination. Gender oppression assumes different forms in different places and witch-hunting is the unique form it has assumed in Jharkhand. Women do not feel safe in pursuing their aspirations because just about everything can get them branded as a witch. Even though there are laws against this practice, they are just for name's sake. My project aspires to make them feel safe and free them from the shackles of this social evil that stems from Patriarchy. My project basically aims to prevent women from falling victim to such mistreatment through various planned efforts elaborated ahead. Furthermore, it will focus on aiding women who have had such harrowing experiences. They would be lent a voice and helped find safe, inclusive spaces where they would once again feel a sense of belonging. Thus, project Garima aims to protect women from indignified lives that witch-hunting makes them susceptible to and also to help women who have been violated find a life of dignity again.
