Millennium Fellowship Project: Teaching Clinic

Here in Nigeria, there is a wide gap between the quality of education that privileged and less privileged children receive. This disparity is primarily due to the fact that poorer parents cannot afford to send their children to quality schools. The schools that these children do attend lack the basic requirements needed to effectively impact the education of a young child. Some of the requirements these schools lack may include qualified teachers, a conducive learning environment, sufficient resources and curriculums. Sometimes, the mentality of the parents themselves might also hinder a child's education.
And as such, these children grow into young adults that are not equipped with the necessary skills required to thrive in a rapidly evolving society. Subsequently, the effect on the individual is that there is reduced career advancement, reduced job opportunities and income inequality. The effect on the society manifests in an increase in crime and delinquencies.
Therefore, the primary goal of the Teaching Clinic is to increase the number of children from underprivileged backgrounds entering University each year.
At Teaching Clinic, we identified a not-for-profit school called The Bright Achievers School and we focus on teaching core subjects to secondary students who are preparing to take their secondary school leaving certificate examinations.
