" Seeing a better, greener, less polluted world with a generation that thinks differently and strives to care for it makes me more thrilled to become a Millennium Fellow. I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because I am looking forward to developing a project that will positively impact the lives of the youth in my community and improve their access to opportunities and quality education.
I think this is a great opportunity to learn from and inspire each other on our missions, creating connections that might one day result in a better and more equitable world. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Kalam Ko Salam
In India, at least 35 million children aged 6 - 14 years do not attend school. 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate. The main reasons for these high numbers are lack of resources and poverty. Our initiative, ‘Kalam Ko Salam’ aims at empowering underprivileged children by providing quality guidance, mentoring, and education to them at zero cost. We combine the conventional modes of teaching along with extracurricular activities. Weekly visits are conducted to the Shubhakshika Open Shelter prior to teaching students of class 3rd, 5th, and 8th. We also aim at creating youth leaders from college graduates, as they commit to their responsibilities as mentors and take care of a child’s education.
