" “Embracing differences, and learning from an array of academic and life lessons are what fuel my passions. As a part of the Millennium Fellowship, I look forward to broadening my perspective as I learn from every experience and interaction. This experience is a privilege and honor as a first-generation college student.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Med Speak!

In a world with thousands of languages and differing dialects, having your voice heard can get lost in translation. When it comes to healthcare, this should not get in the way of being able to properly care for patients. Med Speak is a narrative visualization app that can help physicians, specialists, and patients ensure the best medical practices are at hand. While there are some programs out there for similar reasons, I believe a visual-based app can be more effective. This app will not only be for patients to communicate with physicians but for physicians to be able to explain procedures and plans of treatment as well. Patients can have it on their personal smart devices or medical offices can upload it to tablets that are mobile and can be easily accessible. It will be designed for communicative purposes in a similar manner to assistive technology for nonverbal peoples; i.e. nonverbal autistic.
The app will be simple to navigate.

About the Millennium Fellow

Suzzel Joli Alberto is a first-generation American and college student born to Political refugees from Cuba. She is a Speech and hearing major, a political science minor. She aspires to earn a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience and carry out research pertaining to communicative disorders. Born and raised in Southern California, she was brought up with American and Cuban traditions. With pride in her heritage, Suzzel has always been an advocate for embracing our differences. Her enthusiasm for democracy started at a young age when it came to her attention that her elementary school did not have a student government. She was the founder and president at age 9. She continued in student government through all her high school years. At age 16 she was a representative for California at the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. Enlightened by all she learned, she came back to school and began an equal rights club with guidance from the National Organization for Women. No matter where in life Suzzel has been, she has always strived to help all voices to be heard and will continue this mission in all her future endeavors.
