" Grassroots, community-level approaches to sustainability provide a means for individuals to engage with their local community in an educative and inclusive environment whilst learning about the individual actions that they can take to create a more sustainable and just future. It is the experiences and conversations held in these spaces that proliferate throughout the community that ultimately drive change. Being involved in the Millennium Fellowship, I will gain the skills required to lead the creation of these spaces effectively, having a social and environmental impact aligned with the SDG’s and UNAI principles. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Griffith University Community Garden

An on-campus community garden to equip the next generation with the required skillset and ignite ambitious change. The Griffith University community garden will aid inbembedding sustainability into Griffith staff and students from an education viewpoint and from hands-on experience. Through gardening, learning and sharing knowledge students and staff will learn valuable skills, enjoy healthy, fresh, affordable produce and develop a connection with the food they consume and the environment they live in. Ultimately this will work towards creating healthier individuals and more sustainable and responsible communities. Similarly, the garden will provide the Griffith community with the option to participate in physical activity while encouraging positive well-being. In addition, the space has the potential to serve as an educational hub for further learning (i.e workshops etc.).

About the Millennium Fellow

Angus Brawley is a second-year electrical engineering student at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia. Growing up in a small coastal town surrounded by pristine & untouched wilderness, Angus has always been passionate about the environment and natural world. This led him to study sustainability and energy at university (with a few environmental science and climate change policy subjects thrown in for good measure!). Post university, Angus hopes to move into the renewable energy and sustainability arena as a means to help implement these systems throughout Australia and the world more broadly, creating a cleaner, greener, and more equitable planet.
