" Being open-minded, dauntless, and reliable in addition to closely interacting with communities of women and children maimed by lack of sufficient education are the driving forces behind my passion for social action. I am excited to explore this journey as a Millennium Fellow because the skills I will gain here will enhance and broaden my perspective on how to better target the issues facing these communities. I believe that my participation in this Fellowship will enable me to capture a more global view, and open me up to ways in which these issues have been solved before, such that I am better placed to improve my abilities in aligning the affected communities toward meeting SDGs. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: She-Techie Africa

She-Techie Africa is a for-women project by Millenium Fellows: Donald
Okello, Brian Githinji, and Charlotte Awino, aiming to engage young women from marginalized communities in order to increase their education and career outcomes. It is an appreciation of the fact that women in third-world countries do not have a level playing field in career and education outcomes in comparison to their male counterparts. Instead, they are held back by social injustices such as high pregnancy rates, which increase the drop-out rates among school-going girls. During the Millenium Fellowship period between August and December 2020, this project has the objective of carrying out a minimum of three forums where we will use mentorship sessions and skill-building classes on STEM careers to build a forte for high-school-age girls to engage in conventionally male-dominated industries. It will do this using a combination of round- table discussions, fun team-building activities, and workshops chaired by industry experts.

About the Millennium Fellow

Charlotte Awino is a young, intelligent, futuristic student of telecommunications and information engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Her greatest pursuit in life stems from the realization that the laws of nature naturally place women, and children at an uneven keel, hence, their rights are of utmost importance. Along with the exposure she has garnered in school, and from interacting with women from other countries, she has shaped her abilities toward various forms of social action, including creating a mobile application focused on educating girls to reduce the high rate of pregnancy rates among school-going girls in her country, Kenya. Charlotte aspires to work actively in a technological field that not only inspires women to push beyond conventionally female career roles but one that also encourages the move towards SDG goals by supporting young women and children whose careers and education outcomes are made vulnerable by social influences.
