"Ayo, see what he sent!" I cried bitterly to my friend. "He's threatening me with my nude photos. He wants to blackmail me and he has seized my phone? What did I do to deserve this?"
This was me about a year ago dealing with a blackmail episode by my ex-boyfriend. I couldn't understand anything at that point and I cried so much. It was a really low point for me. He texted my parents and told them lies about me, and my father who I care about so much was disappointed in me. The only person I could talk to was Ayo, a friend who I had never met (at that time). He found a way to calm me and put me back on the right track.
During that time, my cumulative GPA plunged and I lost courage and face in school. I lost voice. I lost everything, everyone - I was lost. I got angry easily, I shouted at everyone, I just wanted to be alone. I almost lost the one friend that stood by me. We fought everytime as he would correct my every move. I got frustrated at every little correction and I would hurt his feelings. But he still remained.
Ayo made me laugh through my depression and brought me back to life. I asked him why he did it and he told me that he had to fight through mental health trauma on his own. He ran away from home, twice and almost committed suicide on one occasion. He told me that he didn't want to see anyone go through the same thing he went through.
At that time I thought. "How noble", until I started actively putting my ears at gossip, street talk and news. The rate of suicides in my community alone was alarming - and obviously the government is to busy to care. Someone needs to do something about it. So, I am currently working on a plan to reach out to people and talk to them about their mental health.
I stay in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria and school in a remote area in Osun state. These places, I'm sure are oblivious to their mental health and alway blame their ill fate on superstitions. I want to change that. I plan to build a team of well meaning and morally sound individuals who will help me achieve this goal.
People need help, and I'm sure with the assistance of the United Nations through the Millennium Fellowship, I can help them.
