" Through the Millennium Fellowship, I hope to be able to take my work with BookOrators to the next level, and create key partnerships with community officials to reform the way reading and literacy is taught in schools, as well as addressing educational inequities within our system. I am excited to work on and exchange ideas with other Millennium Fellows at Harvard and tapping into the network to find Millennium Fellows from around the world who share a similar vision and mission to expand literacy within schools. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: BookOrators 501c(3)
BookOrators is a 501c(3) organization that I started in February 2020. It began with my own desire to see more representation in the books that I read, after struggling to find books that portrayed main characters that looked like me or had a similar background. As I conducted more research on representation in literature and the classroom, I became more aware and informed of the significant educational and racial inequities present in our schools, with literacy acting as a key barrier for many students. Through BookOrators, I have been able to work to address the multifaceted level of educational inequity. To accomplish this goal, my team members and I have designed programs that provide representation, resources, and support to students across academic levels—things often forgotten for the most marginalized groups. We have created resources that highlight over 2000 book recommendations across reading levels featuring main characters of color, which many educators and librarians in my community and across the state have found to be useful tools for their students. With a team of over 100 students and two advisors, BookOrators has impacted around 2000 youth across educational levels through programs such as book clubs, reading comprehension workshops, and our author spotlights. I have personally worked with over 14 libraries in my community and 5 different elementary and middle schools. Our impact as an organization has also gone global, and we have conducted workshops with the National Library Board of Singapore, and established chapters internationally such as in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Currently, I am building partnerships with schools in the greater Cambridge area and I am setting up a reading program and library for the pediatric inpatient program at Mass General Hospital.
