About
On Tuesday, October 4th between 10 - 1 am EDT, Millennium Fellows will be joined by two colleagues at the Nadia's Initiative. Nadia's Initiaitve was co-founded by Novel laureate Nadia Murad, who has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of Iraqi Yazidis following her escape from captivity by ISIS insurgents.
Joining us will be Nadia's initiative co-founder and Nadia's partner Abid Shamdeen, and human rights advocate Olivia Wells. Shamdeen was born and raised in Iraq, and for the past six years has advocated for victims of the Yazidi Genocide, managing projects that have brought aid and assistance to internally displaced Yazidis in Iraq. He worked for the United States Army in Iraq as a cultural advisor and translator and holds a master’s degree in political science from the School of International Service at American University.
Olivia is a human rights advocate with a master’s degree in human rights law. Her expertise is in prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), international criminal law, and sustainable development, with a regional focus on the Middle East. This will be a powerful session for Fellows passionate about Human rights issues, law, and Humanitarianism.
