Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Sheltered
An initiative to aid those who own pets and are struggling to provide for not only themselves but their beloved animals. So many pets are surrendered or seized not because they are not loved but because people don't have the means to learn and know and provide for them. 39% of pets that are surrendered are given up due to space issues. And families that make under 50 thousand a year are far more likely to give a pet up or lose it due to an inability to properly care for the pet. My main focus will be to build outdoor shelters (for dogs to begin with, with hopes to expand to other companion animals and possibly even livestock) and to spread knowledge about animal welfare. This semester I am documenting the steps I have to take in order to be able to start a pilot program here in Worcester, Massachusetts, where dog houses will be built for the first time through this initiative. Overall, I hope to provide shelter and possible fencing to residents who are struggling to take proper care of their animals, to provide education on better animal care, and to eventually provide financial assistance as well.
About the Millennium Fellow
I am 21 years old, a senior studying Global Citizenship and Animal Behavior at Becker College. I love being outdoors and try my best to learn about different social issues with an open mind. I enjoy doing service trips, I have been on 7 through my congregation alone.
