Millennium Fellowship Project: The Democracy Project
The Democracy Project is a non-partisan, student-led initiative that engages young college students in the democratic process. Our goal is to (1) register students to vote, (2) provide them with educational opportunities to learn about different policy issues and candidates' stances on them, and (3) mobilize students to vote on election day.
We hosted 18 voter registration drives, with 260 students registering for the first time or changing their voting address to Rollins College. Additionally, we hosted 9 educational programs where students could meet with U.S. House of Representative candidates Mike Miller and Stephanie Murphy, discuss such events as the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing, the environment, and criminal justice system, and go through a voting simulation to learn about candidates' platforms and fill out sample ballots. These educational programs reached approximately 700 students. We also brought about 60 students to the polls with a shuttle bus for both the primary and general midterm elections. In total, our organization engaged 1,600+ Rollins students.
About the Millennium Fellow
I am a fourth-year student at Rollins College majoring in Political Science and Philosophy. I am passionate about civic engagement and working with children with disabilities. Through the Bonner Leaders Program, I coached flag football at Special Olympics Orange County and taught at CECO -- a school for children with motor disabilities. I currently serve as Student Ambassador of the Rollins College Democracy Project. Eventually, I hope to combine my interest in politics, passion for service, and desire to travel and learn languages into a career in international affairs with the UN.
