" I'm delighted to be a Millennium Fellow because as a doctor-in-training and an advocate of poverty alleviation, I understand the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 1 & 2 in order to eradicate poverty and hunger, and improve the standard of living in my local communities as well as other communities around the world. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Mendicant Relief

Project Mendicant Relief is aimed at tackling the Almajiri (mendicant) issue in Northern Nigeria through enlightenment, continued advocacy and mentorship. While accomplishing this, the project team hopes to effectively tackle the lack of basic family planning and the rise of poverty which are the two basic roots that led to the corruption of the Almajiri system.

This Semester, Our Project Plans include:

1) Organizing 10-15 enlightenment sessions reaching out to a total of 1000 Malams (custodian of the mendicants) to educate them on the need to stop the maltreatment, abuse and misuse of the underaged Almajiris.
2) Increasing support of the public for advocacy against mendicity and alms seeking.
3) Raising $5000 in grants for the establishment of a rural endeavour and organization of skills acquisition programs for the Almajiris
4) Through these, the project team hope to reduce mendicity and alms seeking in Northern Nigeria, One Community at a time!
