Millennium Fellowship Project: Gender Equality Forum
The Gender Equality Forum is a two-day event created in collaboration with HeForShe TEC and our college's student alliance. Touching subjects like masculinity, LGBT+ feminism, revenge porn, modern dating, politics, culture, and the basics of feminism, the event had over 800 attendees in our 8 conferences. The Gender Equality Forum was featured in over 20 different media, such as the newspaper, TV interviews, radio, and social media.
This year we had the chance to bring the Oscar nominee, indigenous woman Yalitza Aparicio as our stellar guest. Along her, we brought the activist Ana Baquedano, life coach Jorge Lozano H., the Institute de Machos a Hombres, 2 judges of the Mexican Supreme Court, and the #1 podcast in Latin America called Se Regalan Dudas.
These people came from all over the country to share with students and the community from Monterrey what they know and think about gender equality. With a diverse set of conferences, we made it our target for it to be an event where everyone can feel safe to attend. For this reason, we led the event with the hashtag #forodetodxs, with translates into Forum for All.
In this project, we were often stopped with institutional barriers and hundreds of negative response from brands when we tried to collaborate. It was the first time an event of Gender Equality of this magnitude was done on Campus. We were allowed to do it on the campus auditorium on September 19 and 20 of 2019.
The results surpassed all our expectations, as we didn't think that so many people would not only show up, but participate and interact with the speakers we brought. The event was so big that the President of our university decided to show up to the closing ceremony and gave a surprise speech on gender equality and how important it was to support young people nowadays with their idea. It was a one-of-a-kind, powerful, and moving event that will surely be repeated next year.
