" I was raised by two lawyers who taught me justice should never be treated as an option. I am honored to be part of the Millennium Fellowship because it will open doors for me to find my place and voice in my community to help those that deserve justice. We, as citizens of the world, should lift each other up and fight for what is right. As a Millennium Fellow, I will have the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals that are ready to make a change and support one another to achieve this goal. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Clean Hands In The Garden
Diarrheal disease is a global issue that takes away the lives of five percent of the Benin population a year. One of the main causes of this disease is poor sanitation. However, research shows this disease can be prevented by simply washing one's hands before eating. Since Andrea's main focus was on Porto-Novo, she researched the capital's climate and found some antiseptic plants that are able to adapt and grow on the area, such as sun-loving yucca roots and clove plants. Plants are a natural and inexpensive way to sanitize and prevent a variety of diseases. Given the current pandemic, Andrea noticed this project would be able to work on local areas that lack sanitizing products that keep on running out of stock. By bringing awareness to the community of Miami on how to grow antiseptic plants that adapt to this city's tropical monsoon climate, people will be able to maintain a clean lifestyle with natural sources of soap.
