" I am really excited to be a part of Millennium Fellowship as it will give me a platform to share my views and bring a positive change in the fashion industry today. Being a fashion enthusiast, it's really heartbreaking to see fashion industry getting unsustainable and unethical in many areas. I believe we as consumers can bring a change together by creating more awareness and increasing the life of the garment we buy. I want to bring out humanity, a human connection to the garment which is missing today. I have made a commitment to make fashion a force of good. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Rethinking fashion

"I have made a commitment to help rebuild fashion for good." - Simran

The initative “Rethinking Fashion”, as the name suggests, attempts to break the usual, linear fashion consumer consumption of buy, use and throw and inculcate the concept of sustainability into our daily lives. The team will be working to advance SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and SDG 13 (Climate action) on campus and in our local area.

For Simran, sustainability means to care about the garments we already have and wear them to the fullest, to practice the 4 R’s (Reduce, Re-wear, Recycle, Repair), to respect and put a smile on garment makers by not dumping their creation and causing no harm to animals and our environment - Because looking good doesn’t have to cost our planet!

Through this initiative, Simran aims to inspire consumers to make conscious decisions on what to wear by providing them easy to follow guides, tips, and inspirational talks and also aim to make this project global, helping other like-minded passionate individuals who want to raise their voices towards sustainable fashion and are finding a platform to start with. Rethinking fashion also aims to introduce a dedicated day in the universities and communities worldwide for swapping clothes and collection of clothes for recycling.

About the Millennium Fellow

Simran Gulati is a student at the Hongkong polytechnic University (Hongkong), studying her BA in Fashion Retail and marketing. She's very passionate, hardworking and an ambitious young lady, who wants to educate individuals about how their increased fashion consumption is impacting the environment. Her motivation to make a social impact comes from her grandmother who always taught her to embrace the clothes she already has, as each garment is made with love, care and hardwork of thousands of people.
