" Surrounded by this cohort of young, like minded change makers, makes me really excited to be a part of the Millennium Fellowship. This is a great opportunity for me to work with this diverse group of great minds, all advancing the sustainable development goals for a better tomorrow. I feel great pride in working on SDG 5 to advocate for the rights of transgenders in my community. I am certain that this generation’s zeal and commitment for gender equality is a testimonial to a fair, productive and equal-opportunity future. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Break the Barriers

The transgender community in Pakistan faces discrimination at the hands of the masses, they are considered to bring shame to the family and are abandoned at an early age. Most of them do not get an opportunity to get a good formal education and start their life with this disadvantage. They are, therefore, forced to work demeaning jobs like begging on the streets, dancing at functions and even prostitution.

Project Break the Barriers, initiated by the non-profit organization, Pakistan Humari Pehchaan, and now under the Millennium Fellowship, aims to provide vocational training to members of the transgender community in Pakistan and consequently link to employment opportunities. This is part of a much larger goal to increase the acceptance of this community and provide them with equal opportunities to contribute in the mainstream of society.

We aim to raise awareness through our social media platforms, about how the members of this community currently make a living and how it is demeaning. We hope to have a following of at least 1000 people on Facebook and Instagram. The aim is to help at least 3 members of this community get vocational training and link them to a good job, and share their success stories.
