" I am excited to be part of the Millennium Fellowship because it allows students all over the world to become advocates for issues affecting their community. As the fellowship points out, there is a wide range of concerning issues that could greatly benefit from community-based initiatives and support. Through this program, students have the chance to develop and lead projects that are goal and community-oriented and I am looking forward to working with other students in my community and hearing what others elsewhere are doing as well. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Blessing the Queen City

Blessing the Queen City is a service-based project where we will be establishing “blessing boxes” around UNC Charlotte and the surrounding area with the purpose of providing non-perishable food items and toiletries to people in need. These blessing boxes will mainly be stocked by online fundraisers, holding donation drives on our campus, and asking neighbors/local businesses to donate as well. We will plant 30 donation boxes on campus and the surrounding areas to acquire 300-450 items on a bi-weekly basis.

There is a potential for food banks in the area to sponsor us so we can branch out beyond our campus. Strategic locations of blessing boxes will be placed around the LYNX Light Rail for accessibility to low-income residents. We will promote our project over social media, to create awareness and engage the community to help with food deserts and food insecurity, hoping to touch the lives of 400-499 people.
