" I am beyond excited to be apart of the Millennium Fellowship Program because as a young person, I feel many people over look our thoughts and feelings and do not take us seriously. I hope this program will help give young people a seat at the table of action. I am elated be able to work with a variety of students from all over the world. I am passionate about the need for sustainability and will do all in my power to make sure our world becomes more sustainable day by day. This is an amazing opportunity that I will not take for granted. I cannot wait to make real CHANGE! "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Reducing Plastic Use in Retail

The goal of this project is to reduce the amount of plastic use and waste in retail business. I currently work at a large retail store. I have worked at the store for around 10 months, and the amount of plastic waste I have witnessed over the past few months is heartbreaking.
For example, there are only plastic hangers on the clothes that are sold. If the customer chooses not to take the hangers home with them, they are thrown away at the end of the day. When new clothing shipment arrives, each individual article of clothing is packaged in its own plastic bag. These plastic bags are discarded into a large plastic garbage bag, that is thrown in a dumpster (not to be recycled). This amount of plastic waste is unnecessary and needs to change as soon as possible.

Some important goals that I hope to accomplish by December 2020 include getting in touch with some big brand name retail companies in hopes of working towards solutions to this amount of plastic use and waste.
