" To be a Millennium Fellow means to be an active participant in the field of social impact and social science. As a student leaning towards the field of academia, I find it very important to be a participant at the field level with organisations engaged in creating a social impact. This makes me understand the ground reality better, and thus take my understanding of the world to a higher level. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Research into Rural Labour Markets
I intend to do academic research on rural labour markets in India - it will involve me partnering with organisations pan-India to collect simple qualitative data that would be used to enhance my research. My specific research topic is labour market disequilibrium and the economics of identity. I plan to see how rural identity interacts with economic institutions like the labour market - and how it affects unemployment dynamics. I posit that because rural identity is dependent on how fellow villagers evaluate your actions, self-interested wage bidding (in the downward direction) is constrained, and hence labour markets remain in a neoclassical "disequilibrium" (unemployment). I further plan to develop a model that explains this phenomenon
