UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT KARA BATCHELOR, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2021.
Griffith University | Brisbane, Australia | Advancing SDG 5 & UNAI 3
" Fuelled by my passion to make a change and promote awareness in the area of violence against women, I believe that being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will allow me to develop my skills, connect with, and work collaboratively alongside, like-minded people who are as motivated as I am to make a significant social impact. I believe this will allow me to better develop my proposed solutions to these worldly issues, by ensuring they are well thought out and crafted in a way that can make tangible change. I am incredibly excited by this opportunity to promote change, not only within my local community but to those all around the world! "
Millennium Fellowship Project: It's On All Of Us
Initiated by passionate Griffith student, Kara Batchelor, the It’s On All Of Us project strives to spread awareness of the prevalence of violence within the community. More importantly, however, it seeks to educate the community about the ways in which we, as supportive community members, can actively be allies to those suffering from violence by being active bystanders. As an extension of Griffith University’s “It’s On All Of Us” week, dedicated to promoting awareness and prevention of sexual violence, this project seeks to spread a greater awareness to those outside of the university of not only sexual violence, but of the many other forms of violence that are unfortunately present within our community, by providing bystander training to students and creating an awareness video. This project has also extended to facilitating a MATE Bystander Training session for Griffith Honours College students to enhance their learnings in this area!
About the Millennium Fellow
Kara Batchelor is a bright, enthusiastic, and passionate law and criminology student studying at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, Australia. Her passion towards striving for equality, women's rights, and access to justice in the law has developed during her time studying law and criminology but was particularly enhanced when attending a study tour to Thailand, whereby she learned about the difficulties Thai women face when it comes to fighting for their own rights and being protected from violence - both physical and sexual. This experience was eye-opening for her, as she became more aware of the fact that women in Australia are facing the same struggles in relation to fighting against violence! Thus, Kara now aspires to be a legal advocate for women facing these same struggles and is driven to promote awareness and the need for change along the way - therefore, providing her own contribution in the development of the United Nations' Sustainable Goals.
