United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. In 2021, over 25,000 young leaders on 2,000+ campuses across 153 nations applied to join the Class of 2021. 136 campuses worldwide (just 6%) were selected to host the 2,000+ Millennium Fellows. The Class of 2021 is bold, innovative, and inclusive.

I feel an innate responsibility to help others around me and through Griffith University Amnesty International (GUAI), I have a platform to spark such change. Inspired by my own network of strong, capable women, I am hoping to work with other student leaders in GUAI to create a positive, impactful difference. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Griffith University Amnesty International
Griffith University Amnesty International (GUAI) is a non-profit organisation, independent of political ideology, economic interest or religion. It is led by students with a passion for advocating for human rights at Griffith University. The aims and objectives of GUAI are to raise awareness courageously about protecting and defending human rights. To reach these objectives, the group will coordinate events, campaigns and fundraisers across Griffith University. We will carry out a wide range of educational activities and promote the values contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Throughout 2021, GUAI aims to focus our development and aid towards women’s rights and empowerment. This is extremely relevant in relation to the Australian of the Year, Grace Tame, who is an activist and advocate for survivors of sexual assault.
To measure whether our impact has been successful over the period of the MF program, we have set quantifiable and realistic goals which strive towards achieving our project aims both within our university and wider community. These goals include the organisation and execution of events, fundraisers and socials. We will know we have been successful when:
- We successfully organise 3 events in association with MATES Bystander, which will impact 20 lives each event.
- We effectively collaborate with Days for Girls on International Day of the Girl Child and create 1000 sanitary packs for young women living in poverty.
- We fundraise $2000 through the execution of a Gala Ball during Write for Rights week.
About the Millennium Fellow
Mary Higgins is a second year Business and Psychology student at Griffith University who is passionate about making a difference in the world. Under the auspice of Griffith University Amnesty International, Mary, along side many other passionate students, is hoping to raise awareness on women's rights and empowerment through education and fundraising.
