" I see the Millennium Fellowship as a lifetime opportunity to work with a global team and bring about incremental change toward a better future. I am very excited to share my ideas with a diverse group of students and learn about how I can make my work create a larger impact. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Pick Me Garden

"Don't pick", "Don't pluck the flowers", "Don't pluck the fruits ", These are the messages one would see in campuses and residential communities. With urbanisation, the green landscape is shrinking and is quickly replaced with concrete jungles. While there is interest in maintaining a garden, it comes with the riders above. I would like to challenge this and convert the reserved area for greenery into a space for growing edible greens and easy to grow vegetables (Pick me garden).

The concept is to use the minimally available open space designated for ornamental plants to cultivate greens and vegetables that can provide food to the community while maintaining the green cover. This is useful in an urban context where space is limiting and there is a need to maintain green cover. The resources and funding which is made available for ornamental plants can be channelised towards this effort which will feed the community while keeping the purpose of open space intact. Due to the current limitations from covid-19, we will continue spreading awareness about my initiative on social media, by delivering webinars to schools and reaching out to different apartment complexes.
