UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT LAURA MARIE AMRHEIN, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2021.
Salisbury University | Maryland, United States | Advancing SDG 2 & UNAI 1
" Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.” — Nelson Mandela.
I am grateful and excited to have been selected as a Millennium Fellow this year! I look forward to collaborating with other students who are ready to make an impact or change in our world while promoting the SDG's values. Even more, I am ecstatic to start my personal project, which will allow me to provide resources for those in need. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Boxes of Caring
For my project, I created two large blessing boxes that hold toiletries, nonperishable food, and school supplies. These Blessing Boxes are being installed in the Salisbury, MD community to help community members in need. Throughout the project, I had to get funding for the boxes, purchase materials, build the boxes, get permission to install the boxes, install them, and ensure that they stay stocked.
About the Millennium Fellow
Laura Amrhein is a student at Salisbury University majoring in early childhood education. Her goal after college is to become a dedicated first or second-grade teacher, creating a welcoming and positive learning environment for all students. After leaving home to attend college a few hours away, Laura was struck by the amount of poverty that she encountered, especially within the schools in the area. Such inspired her to create a project focused on providing resources, including school supplies, food, and toiletries, to students and the surrounding community. Laura is ecstatic to complete her project and positively impact the area in which she attends college. Her passion is to make a tangible difference in the world around her. Outside of academics, Laura enjoys running, hiking, baking, and reading.
