Millennium Fellowship Project: Jua Haki Leo (JHL)
JHL is an initiative that was started to sensitize and educate the youth on the basic laws and how to act when unlawfully arrested, it is under SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). In Nairobi the police officers take advantage of the youth ignorance in understanding the law and oppress them with intentions of obtaining bribe. The youth have been a target for corrupt and rouge police officers in Nairobi city, nights in Nairobi might seem so peaceful and for a normal Kenyan but this is not the case for the youth, a night in Nairobi is like walking in hell for a young person that maybe found in the streets at this time. Despite the bribery act of 2016 that lays out the guidelines and consequences of up to ten years imprisonment for briery offenses the police still exploit fearful young people. The youth have really faced this tough fate for a long time. JHL is a space where the youth can have open discussions learn and understand the law, know what to say or do whenever they are unlawfully arrested. Our main goal is to serve as many youths as possible law information, ensure they understand the law eventually leading to a decline of police bribery among the youth hence just and strong justice institutions.
