Millennium Fellowship Project: Do No Harm

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated, for many, existing problems in the way we disseminate and learn about medical information. A lot of existing scientific information is complex or uses scientific jargon that makes it inaccessible to people without that knowledge base. Furthermore, most people do not have the adequate time required to dedicate towards parsing through what is a false claim and what is a substantiated one. As a pre-med student applying to medical school after a gap year, it is also a really important and personal cause to me. I think that it’s great that the scientific community has made such great strides in its knowledge base and awareness of how to critically look at science, but that this skill set can be bolstered by learning how to better communicate this information to the general public. Born out of seeing the spread of misinformation on social media throughout the pandemic, the goal of Do No Harm is to provide peer-reviewed and accurate scientific information on social media. The project tackles SDG 4: Quality Education. Furthermore, Do No Harm hopes to achieve this by making posts in an approachable and easy-to-understand format. Do No Harm will also make all posts compatible for text-to-sound readers and utilize alternative text to make all posts as accessible as possible to individuals with disabilities. To pair with the social media account, I plan to host a zoom webinar which will serve as a workshop on how to approach, understand and fact-check seemingly “scientific” unreputable sources. Ultimately, my goal is to reach a few hundred people on social media and encourage them to think critically and carefully about the healthcare science they come across on social media.
