Millennium Fellowship Project: Promoting Unity Through Sports

Sports in Nigeria are unarguably appreciated for the exuberance feelings it generates and the unity in diversification it promotes. Despite the consensual fawning of sports, there are existential problems associated with sports being viewed as a viable source of economy. A typical example in the lives of youths in Nigeria is becoming a sportsman, or sportswoman is faced with discriminating comments about sports being a waste of time careerwise, as only a rare proportions make it to the top. Particularly, the older generations see sports as entertainment and not a platform to ascertain their children's careers. While their apprehension might be justified due to Nigeria's situation, I strongly believe that interested persons should be supported and not outright rejected. The support can, however, be enhanced with additional skill sets that can thrive in Nigeria. This is the crux of my project. I am raising awareness of sports' role in economic development and creating mindsets reorientation towards interested sports persons. As a member of the Sustainable Development Advocates (SDA), which is a students' SDGs club at the University of Lagos, I'll be implementing this project under their auspices through partnerships.
