Millennium Fellowship Project: Preventing Spread of Lassa Fever

INTRODUCTION: Lassa Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever.

EPIDEMIOLOGY: It's known to be endemic in countries like Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea. In Nigeria, it's predominant in states like Edo, Ondo and Bauchi. Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and both sexes.

CAUSE: It's caused by contamination of foods or household items with urine or faeces of rodents (Mastomys natalensis). Person-to-person infections and laboratory transmission can also occur.

RISK FACTORS: Living in rural areas where Mastomys rats are predominant, poor sanitation, overpopulation, being a health worker

SYMPTOMS: Fever ( upto 40•C), weakness, sore throat, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscular pain, abdominal pain, bleeding from nose, mouth, ears,

TREATMENT: Ribavirin an anitiviral drug is highly potent in treating Lassa fever.

PREVENTION: Use of rodenticides, Practicing good community hygiene, storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, adequate disposal of waste, avoid contact with blood and body fluids while caring for the sick.

It's important to know that currently, there is no known vaccine that prevents against Lassa fever. Hence, the preventive measures listed above must be strictly adhered to.

About the Millennium Fellow

Elochukwu Nwaka is a hardworking and highly prolific 5th year medical student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Nigeria. His quest for academic and leadership excellence has seen him through achieving success. He currently holds a B.Sc in Physiology from Madonna University, M.Sc in Physiology from University of Benin all in Nigeria and currently studying for an undergraduate degree MBBS in Medicine and Surgery. Elochukwu holds a position as the secretary of Standing Committee on Public Health in Ambrose Alli University Medical student's Association where he has contributes and plays major roles in Public Health education, enlightenment, and awareness campaigns. This drive to providing solutions to public health issues which affects him immediate local community has made Elochukwu stand out among his peers. He is very hardworking at all he does in order to achieve success . Elochukwu puts in his absolute best efforts to provide his own contribution in the development of the United Nations' Sustainable Goals.
