" I am very passionate about public health and I believe that with proper intervention we can save millions of people who die needlessly of diseases that are preventable and treatable. I believe we can make a difference by providing health education, building early screening habits among the public, and providing people the essential help they need to protect themselves from diseases. I'm excited to join the Millennium Fellowship as I believe it ignites the ability to lead and find the courage to put my ideas into action. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: NCD Alert

The NCD Alert project works to address the rapidly growing risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) - particularly diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease - among federal government office workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project is designed with the objectives:
- educating and empowering the workers to lead healthier lifestyles by avoiding the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases,
- screening for non-communicable diseases to detect serious illnesses early and to prevent disease progression,
- coordinating with local governments and partners on new health policies that improve the detection, treatment, and management of non-communicable diseases, and
- empowering medical students at Addis Ababa University with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to address non-communicable diseases in public.

The project is implemented by the Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH), one of the six standing committees of the Ethiopian Medical Students’ Association at Addis Ababa University. I am Vice-Director of SCOPH and work as Director for NCD Alert. Activities under this project include awareness campaigns, screening programs, and training for medical students.
