UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT RAOLAT ADENIKE SALAMI, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2022.
Afe Babalola University | Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria | Advancing SDG 3 & UNAI 9
" In my time as a medical student, I have been constantly faced with innumerable defects in the healthcare systems of low income countries and the ways these defects prevent adequate healthcare delivery especially to the less privileged members of the population.
This has given me a drive to make a positive impact on these people's lives by improving their access to healthcare and the quality of this healthcare system.
I'm excited to be a Fellow because I know this program would help lay the groundwork for my future initiatives to achieve this and come even one step closer to the UN's SDG 3 which advocates good health and well-being for all, at every stage of life. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Hundreds Hearts Initiative
In Nigeria, 1 in 3 adults have some form of heart disease and several studies have shown that only about 50% of these people are aware of this. The importance of spreading awareness and educating the masses on the prevention and management of heart disease cannot be understated and as such the Hundred Hearts Initiative was born.
This project was developed to improve the cardiovascular health of both people with heart disease and those who may be at risk and is directed towards the at risk populations for heart disease.
This project would entail reaching a hundred hearts through health education and health rallies, management and prevention through blood pressure checks, dietary modification and prevention of other risk factors.
Measurable goals I hope to achieve include;
- Organizing 5 community outreaches focusing on a minimum of 20 people each.
- During each program health talks, blood pressure checks and blood sugar monitoring would be carried out along with giving advice on dietary modification.
- Webinars and online discussions will be held twice monthly to increase the spread of healthcare information on the common risks for heart disease and how to avoid them.
In short, I would have positive impact on a minimum of hundred hearts in my time as a Millenium Fellow.
