Millennium Fellowship Project: Itójú ara sájú oyún
The title of this project, Ìtójú ara sájú oyún, is a yoruba adage in our community which means "proper care should be done before pregnancy". This project is carried out in order to improve maternal well being and childhood short term and long term outcomes in the community. Many men, women both old and young in this community are not aware of preconceptional care so many times women end up pregnant with various uncontrolled medical conditions like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sickle cell disease, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. This puts them and their babies at risk. The aim of this project is to address this problem. We want to increase the rate at which women have their blood pressure controlled, diabetes managed, adherence to antiretroviral drugs, optimized red blood states in sickle cell disease before getting pregnant. We plan to achieve this by educating both men and women, informing them that health of the baby starts even before pregnancy, carry out screening for medical conditions, and referrals for high risk groups. There will also be counselling on contraceptives which will allow for pregnancy spacing while a woman optimizes her health.
