" Leadership and service fueled by socially impactful activities is the motivation behind my daily life. With the SDGs, if good leadership and the spirit to serve are not gotten as a collective umbrella, the narrative will remain the same. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Future Pacesetters Initiative
Gurungu is a farming community in the Upper West Region of Ghana, Wa West District, with a population of over 6000. The farmers are primarily engaged in groundnut, millet, and maize farming. The community has no light. Since the establishment of education in Gurungu far back in the 1960s, the community has not gotten 20 girls in tertiary education or who have graduated from Tertiary education nor working in the formal sector. This social canker has caused most girls to have early marriages and pregnancies, leading to hardship among young girls. Preliminary investigation reveals that the girls could not continue to the tertiary because of a lack of guidance, financial support, and exposure to opportunities that could make them achieve their educational dreams. Despite the women's challenges, investigations in the community also revealed that the community does not see it necessary for gender equality.
SOLUTION
Upon consultations with partners and other social enterprise advisors, it is relevant to provide a program that retains girls in school and demystifies males' belief that females are only housewives. It is necessary to provide mentorship, coaching, financial support, and other opportunities to the coming girls and boys in the said community and its environs. This is to motivate and guide them to achieve their future dreams, prevent teenage pregnancies and encourage both genders to support the development of one another. This spans from junior high primary school to the time of graduation from Tertiary education. This motivated the start of the "Future Pacesetters Initiative," where we aim to set up an educational fund to assist young students to move into tertiary after graduation from Senior High School, exposing them to various opportunities that can help them. Also, educational materials and other items
would be provided to motivate and keep them active from Junior High School till they graduate from tertiary. The initiative is tackling 3 SDGs; End Poverty, Quality Education & Lifelong Skills Acquisition, & Gender Equality & empowerment.
