" Wanting to make the world a better place in your individual capacity - is just setting an intention. The Millennium Fellowship, for me, is an opportunity and a platform to realize this intention through my intended project and by connecting with a global network of leaders spearheading social impact in their communities. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Aawaz: Empowering a collective voice of difference.

- We plan to set up an organization that primarily aims to create and facilitate both specific and intersectional, safe community spaces for LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and differently-abled people in India as a long-term goal.

- To begin with, the target population group would consist of queer, neurodivergent, and differently-abled students at Ashoka University in India who can speak English and/or Hindi.

- We would host safe spaces that uphold certain guidelines for respect, non-discrimination, inclusion and sensitivity. These spaces would consist of open and closed sharing circles, activity-oriented spaces (such as music, watercolor painting, etc.), peer learning spaces, focused group discussions, ranting spaces, co-working spaces, and casual hang-out spaces to begin with.

- Some spaces would be common for people of different ages, and some would be specific to certain age brackets (depending on the relevance of a particular space for students of different ages and in different academic programs).

- We have several potential ideas for themes for the spaces. Some could be community-specific, for example, “Clothing, gender expression and queerness” for the LGBTQIA+ community. Intersectional spaces would focus on community similarities or people with intersectional social identities, for example, “Navigating dating as a differently-abled queer person”.

- Virtual spaces enabled many people from marginalized groups living outside metro cities in India to find and interact with their community members during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hoping to provide such an avenue to people who may not have contact with their own communities, most spaces would initially be hosted virtually.

- Tentatively, depending on the pandemic situation, there would be some offline spaces for Ashoka University students to join at their university campus.

- Additionally, we plan to build an open-access repository of resources for people belonging to the aforementioned communities, as well as their families, friends and other individuals. These resources would broadly include relevant legal information and processes + physical and mental health and well-being support.
