" One conversation with someone whose life has been forever altered by the Covid 19 pandemic has been ingrained in my mind. The foundation of my project is based on this very conversation that pushed me to think about the ways in which information can be disseminated in this age of pseudoscience and misinformation.
Being a Millennium Fellow gives me an opportunity to learn with my peers, working on a project that can only be realised by the collaborative effort of people who want to change the world with their incredible ideas. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Covid Literacy Project

This pandemic has brought on a wave of pseudoscience- information that falsely claims to be based on the scientific method. I want to target and dismantle this very institution of pseudoscience that exists in my university and the town of Asawarpur that is near my university. The first stage of my project would entail gathering information to assess the extent to which people, particularly the residents of the rural town and the housekeeping staff (who we respectfully call didis and bhaiyas) have misunderstood facts about the Covid-19 pandemic. Then I aim to find out the sources of this misinformation and compile all this data to figure out how this can be prevented. Finally, my last stage would entail me holding sessions where I talk to them about my findings, having dialogue with them on the sources of the misinformation that has threatened their good health over the past two years. I would also like to publish a manual detailing my findings generally on the nature of pseudoscience and specifically connecting it to this situation.

About the Millennium Fellow

Kiara Kaizad Driver is a senior undergraduate student at Ashoka University, India. She is majoring in English Literature with a minor in History. She loves to travel and has spent her summers backpacking in Asia and Africa. She firmly believes that there is no “post-pandemic” and the world will face the political, economic, social and biological repercussions of the Covid 19 outbreak for decades to come. She endeavours to assess the impact of this virus on socially and economically disadvantaged communities and how one can overcome educational and linguistic barriers to make life-saving information easily accessible and understandable to these communities.
